Winter to Spring: Mastering the Art of Seasonal Transition Style

It’s the time of year when the weather can have a bit of a split personality. One week you’re seeing record snow fall and ice storms, the following week the elements are melting under 60 degree temps. With the forecast taking you on a rollercoaster ride, it can be challenging to know how to dress for the transitional months.

One of Ryley Wimer’s responsibilities as Savannah Sevens founder is knowing how to buy apparel that’s not only on-brand and on-trend, but also well-suited for each season. In this edition of the Haute on the Ranch blog, she’s sharing five styling tips she swears by when navigating winter to spring fashion. With just a little guidance, figuring out your interim fits will go from mystifying to mastered real quick!

The Color Palette

By this time, you’re probably ready for a pop of color in your closet. Fresh shades always seem to lift the fashion mood. However, don’t be afraid to continue wearing darker hues as well. We’ll explain…

•Avoid warm fall tones like rust and saddle tan; instead opt for cooler hues like creams and whites in your tops and outerwear.

•Additionally, light olive and sage green, light yellow and light blue will be strong for spring so start incorporating them now.

•If you wear dark denim, like our exclusive Ledger Jean, pair them with lighter tops. If you choose light denim, like our exclusive Kaycee Jean, add a darker, cooler tone such as navy, green or charcoal.

Layer Up

Knowing how to layer your wardrobe might be your biggest asset in bridging the fashion gap between winter and spring.

•Snag a good basic white tee to wear under sweaters for a little extra warmth and a hint of color contrast.

•A light denim button up or a light colored pearl snap, like the new Aullville, are perfect to pair with sweaters and cardigans to add a spring touch to a heavier silhouette.

•One of my favorite layered looks? A blazer over an open denim shirt and a classic white tee or tank.

•Consider cuffing a darker denim, like the exclusive Livy Jean, because the inside of the leg is more muted and will balance out a lighter top piece.

Dresses and Accessories

With a chill still in the air, you might tend to shy away from dresses or skirts when planning your outfit for the day. Think about adding warmth through a knit cardigan or oversized sweater, belted. Also, try to keep the color a light neutral, like cream, to add softness.

Accessories might not be on your radar when you think about adding hints of spring to your fit, but they are the finishing touches that make your look complete, so don't forget about them!

•Integrate pops of turquoise and silver jewelry with your olive green pieces to bring a fresh feel.

•Referencing the tip above about steering clear of warm fall tones, you can sport cognac colors in your leather accessories.

•Consider lighter-toned footwear and handbags to brighten your outfit. One of our favorite boots to style with year round is The Shiloh because it’s the perfect neutral.

Outerwear Options

When buying a coat for the winter season, one thing to keep in mind is if you purchase a certain shade or fabric, it can also transition your style to spring. Here’s what we mean:

Embrace timeless, capsule patterns like herringbone with lighter flecks in the textile.

•Chocolate brown was the hottest color for fall and winter, however, it also pairs perfectly with light blue denim, such as The Avera wrap coat with The Kaycee Jean.

•Other shades of coats and jackets to consider are light tans, creams, or whites to enhance the spring vibe.

Floral Focus

One trend you can always count on in spring is…you guessed it! Florals. But we’re here to tell you even pretty petal patterns from fall will make your style bloom in the transition period. Florals with a dark background in cool hues like navy and charcoal work well when paired with light wash jeans. Additionally, romantic florals in reds, pinks and purples are perfect in February {for obvious reasons} but also shift into spring seamlessly. One of our current favorites? The Covina cardigan!
