Haute on the Ranch: On Location for the Spring/Summer Photo Shoot
When the Savannah Sevens team opened up the sliding glass door of the hunting lodge we made home base for this year’s Spring/Summer Photo Shoot, the wind was whipping and whispering about as hard as you would expect in western Kansas. Immediately, we all looked at each other in disbelief – we were counting on the weather forecast’s promise of a light breeze.
It was Wednesday, April 16 – day two of an event that we had been planning for weeks. In the last decade, Savannah 7s owner Ryley Wimer and her team have held photo shoots biannually that feature seasonal styled looks in ruggedly picturesque locations. But this particular shoot was different – Ryley had the vision of investing in an experience, not just for those participating, but also for our customers.

What was normally an afternoon to golden hour timeframe had been expanded across 3 ½ days. Two western influencers were flown in; 18 separate outfits had been meticulously put together; inspiration Pinterest boards created; locations scouted; a hair and makeup artist and photographer brought in; lodging booked; snacks and drinks packed; a horse trailer cleaned out and hitched up to act as an on-location dressing room; a daily itinerary mapped out; and a content strategy created to bring you along for the ride.
With our hair gusting about, garment bags swaying back and forth, and doors to the SUVs being forced open against the wind, the Savannah 7s team, our two models and photographer set out on the 100 mile drive to the location of the day. This place was special – considered a National Natural Monument, the setting is more southwest than midwest. A completely unexpected landscape for the typically flat prairies of Kansas, the backdrop it provided for the Savannah 7s photo shoot would be epic and unforgettable, if only mother nature would cooperate.

God answered our prayers.
After a long stretch of county dirt roads dotted with free ranging cattle, our three car caravan made it to the destination. Like an oasis in the desert, there in front of us stood these majestic chalk formations rising up to almost 50 feet in the air. Known as Monument Rocks, this jaggedly beautiful Kansas landmark had been on photographer Temri Vogt’s bucket list to shoot at and a place Ryley had wanted to return to for years.
“The white rock – it has a limestone look that is such a part of our landscape in Kansas, especially where I live in the central part of the state,” said Ryley. “Sandstone is darker and many of the pastures are still brown, so you get this gorgeous airy white light reflecting off the rocks and it pairs so well with our spring looks.”
As we all stepped out of our vehicles to take in the awe-inspiring sight, there was a realization: the restless wind had calmed to a light breeze. With a crisp blue sky and marshmallow clouds overhead, we knew it was one of those photo shoot days where everything was working in our favor. It was time to unload the vehicles, get dressed in the first looks, check the sun for lighting and shadows, and enjoy the beauty before us.
The Inspiration

With a total of 18 looks, each complete with jewelry, footwear, belts and handbags, the style of the Spring/Summer Photo Shoot was thoroughly thought out, scrutinized, adjusted and then readjusted, until each outfit came together with such clarity and precision.
There are looks geared toward the all-American girl, the modern cowgirl, the ultra feminine girl, the girl with an edge, the old money girl, and so much more. What each aesthetic had in common was a through line of western elegance. Where did that inspiration come from?
“I really honed in on the Spring/Summer runway of Ralph Lauren,” said Ryley. “I loved elements of his styling details, from going back to a side knot to layers with an open front, like a button up. We’ve incorporated these nuances into each look and it’s going to bring a fresh perspective to the fashion.”
