Haute on the Ranch: How To Transition Summer's Greatest Hits Into Staple Fall Fits
Barbecues. Lake life. Fourth of July. Outdoor concerts. Family vacation. There are some things that just go hand-in-hand with summer. It’s like, once the calendar hits Memorial Weekend, there is a complete shift in schedules, daily activities and even attitude and mindset.
May through August also has its own style. There is a carefree spirit to fashion and specific pieces just seem to represent the season. But what happens to your wardrobe when the warm summer days give way to more crisp fall afternoons?
While you may think you have to pack up those signature summer items you wore on the daily because they have no place in your fall closet, we beg to differ! In this Haute on the Ranch blog, Savannah Sevens is going to demonstrate How To Transition Summer’s Greatest Hits Into Staple Fall Fits.
Basic Tanks
Bright colors. Neutral shades. Strappy. Cropped. Ribbed. V-neck and crew neck. There sure are a lot of styles of a basic summer tank. No doubt your closet is full of them because of their ability to be diverse yet clean and simple.
Basic tanks are also an ideal part of the summer uniform because they keep you cool and comfortable against the sweltering temps. But as the mercury begins to fall in fall, so does your desire to keep reaching for this popular option.
We want basic tanks to remain in your wardrobe rotation, and here’s why: they are the perfect layering pieces! Whether you’re throwing on a flannel or keeping it chic in a blazer, you will need a tank to bring the look together. Neutral colors like black, white, brown and gray will be effortless in their fall transition, but hold onto all shades because you never know when an autumn fit will need a pop of color!
Here, we’ve taken The Safford, a natural ribbed tank featured in our spring/summer photo shoot as a standalone top, and have paired it with a richly-colored Pendleton cardigan. Its neutral nature allows the eye-catching cowboy scene on the cardigan to do all the talking. We finished the look with The Asher medium light wash wide leg jean with tacked cuffs; The Larue, a leather bootie; and a cute wristlet clutch called The Roca.
Light Wash Denim
Oftentimes it’s thought that dark denim belongs in fall and winter and light denim is the staple color of spring and summer. While that general rule makes sense based upon the shades and fabrics of each season, rules are meant to be broken, right?
There is no need to bury your light wash jeans in the back of your closet this fall. That’s because they pair so well with darker toned tops like gray, black and navy blue. Many of us have houndstooth or plaid blazers in brown and cream colors – look street chic when you match that with light wash denim and casual sneakers. The juxtaposition of darker or richer colors on top and light to medium light denim on the bottom provides balance in your style.
We’ve coupled The Dillyn Jean, an ultra high rise wide leg, with The New Haven knit top. See how the soft charcoal goes so well with the light wash of the jean? We also love the details of this fit: the subtle texture of the top and the wide denim hemline that can be cuffed. The look is finished off with a rich leather sneaker called The Texicos; a crossbody bag called The Tescott; and a pop of color with the HDWest cap.
The Color Green
If you’re like us, the green section of your wardrobe is probably more robust than others, and this summer, we’re guessing you cycled through that earthy shade multiple times. Green is such a universal color: it’s one of the easiest for all skin tones to wear, and each variation in shade is so flattering.
Lucky for us, green is also a hot hue this autumn! From olive to sage to chartreuse, you’re going to see an array of green shades this season. So don’t pack away those tanks, tees, and dressy tops because they will continue to fit right in with all of your fall fits. Guess that green section in your closet is about to get bigger…
For this look, we paired a gorgeous chartreuse bronze embroidered top, The Tusayan, with a slightly distressed medium dark wide leg jean, The Slaton. To pull it all together, we’ve added The Camak crossbody bag, The Roslyn wooden clog slingbacks, and the Blanc Porter wool cowboy hat.
Denim Shorts
If you could name one item that has been a fashion constant summer after summer, denim shorts would come to the top of the list. They provide effortless style for truly any warm weather occasion: outdoor concerts, a cover-up after pool or lake time, kids sporting events, rodeos, vacationing, and more.
As soon as September rolls around, there seems to be an automatic shift in selecting jeans over shorts when dressing for the day. We’re here to tell you, those cutoffs are still cool! As long as any dips in temperature don’t send you shivering, pair denim shorts with any long sleeve sweater, cardi, pullover or blazer.
In the same way as wearing light denim with darker tops, there is a balance here when you have shorts on the bottom and longer sleeves above. It’s like your clothing is reflecting the transition of the seasons. Pro tip: if your sweaters or knitwear are a little bulky or long, you can always do a front or half tuck to give structure to your outfit.
These Z Supply denim shorts were a signature summer purchase of our customers, so we’ve paired them with a new fall drop, The Ravenna houndstooth blazer. A classic double-lined tank, The Moraga, is the perfect layering piece {see, keep those summer tanks handy}. And it’s been completed with The Sonora fringe handbag, a fan favorite The Portola buckle, and The Terlingua cowgirl boots.
